I have found no way to set the default search engine for the new Microsoft Edge without locking the settings. I've tried the well known Edge search engine GPO settings mentioned in this thread: Edge-Chromium GP - How to set google as default, bypass first run dialog, and have tab page without news?. But after applying the GPO the settings are locked and users can't change it anymore.I also did some research in the Chromium preferences documentation ( _names.cc?view=markup) with the goal to create a master preferences file, but found no parameter which will preselect another of the available search engine-presets.
Read on to learn how to change your default search engine, whether you use Chrome, Edge or Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari on all your devices.
How to Change Default Search Engine in Microsoft Edge Chromium
To change the default search engine in Chrome, click on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner. Then go to Settings > Search engine > Search engine used in the address bar. Choose another provider in the drop-down menu. Add a provider not listed by going to Manage search engines, clicking on Add, then Make default under the More actions button.
To change the default search engine in Safari, open the browser and click Safari in the Apple Menu Bar. Then select Preferences, click the Search tab, and choose a default search engine from the drop-down menu next to Search engine.
You can also change the default search engine in Safari anytime by clicking the magnifying glass icon in the left side of the address bar. Once you choose a default search engine, a checkmark will appear next to its name.
To change the default search engine in Edge, click on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner. Then go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services. Click on the Address bar arrow and choose a provider from the drop-down. You can add more providers under Manage search engines.
We call this family of browser modifiers Adrozek. If not detected and blocked, Adrozek adds browser extensions, modifies a specific DLL per target browser, and changes browser settings to insert additional, unauthorized ads into web pages, often on top of legitimate ads from search engines. The intended effect is for users, searching for certain keywords, to inadvertently click on these malware-inserted ads, which lead to affiliated pages. The attackers earn through affiliate advertising programs, which pay by amount of traffic referred to sponsored affiliated pages.
This technique impacts not only Microsoft Edge but other Chromium-based browsers. These browsers store user settings and preferences, such as home page and default search engine, in the Preferences file. For each of the four target browsers, it modifies the relevant DLL:
Every browser has its default search engine to make online search easy for users. For instance, Chrome and Safari iOS use Google, while Edge uses Bing. However, you can change the default search engine in Microsoft Edge to any site that uses OpenSearch technology.
In Microsoft Edge, Go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search and services. Scroll down under Services, Click on the Address bar and search. The engine or website you set to default search will now appear in the list of options.
Edge chromium ships with Bing set as default search engine. If you want to change that you need to enable the following settings. First I was irritated because the values with all those curly brackets looked quite strange but you do not need to replace anything regarding the values.
4. Then click on Google and select your favorite search engine. By default, you only have Google, DuckDuckGo, Baidu, and Yahoo. But you can select custom and add other search engines like Brave search, Ecosia, or StartPage that are not listed.
Though the new Edge Chromium is good, Microsoft should let users choose a default browser and search engine of their choice that works everywhere including the Start menu search. Nonetheless, we have third-party tools to get the job done.
Even though Google is the most popular search engine, some web browsers still don't automatically set it as the default. If you want to make sure all your web searches are done through Google, you can adjust your search settings no matter what browser you use.
After you installed it, the first thing you want to do is to change your default search engine to Google or DuckDuck (unless you really like Bing). You can do that from the Settings panel, Privacy and Services tab.
If Bing and Edge aren't the default search engine and browser on your Windows 10 computer, you might see a pop-up that says, "Microsoft recommends different browser settings. Want to change them?" To stop these pop-ups, type the following (or cut and paste) into the browser's search bar: edge://flags/#edge-show-feature-recommendations. Then, turn off Show feature and workflow recommendations.
If you are playing with Microsoft Chromium Edge browser, you may want to change the default search engine so you can use your favorite right from the address bar. In the earliest builds this could not be easily done, but today it is not a problem:
The default search engine configured in Microsoft Edge is Bing. But a lot of us have different preferences and would like to have Google, Yahoo or other search engines to be the default. Here's how to do this-
You can now type anything on the address bar and edge will search it for you using your new search engine. If the search engine supports suggestions like Google, it will also show these suggestions as well.
This is much similar to chrome where you can add search engines after visiting that search home page. The technology behind this search enging detection is call "Open Search". So any search engine that supports "Open search" can be added to edge. Currently available options are - Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo and Twitter.
